We’ve all heard of the health benefits of a steaming bowl of oatmeal. The stem of oats is also used as a mild nervine tonic that helps to calm and nourish the nervous system. Oat straw has traditionally been used to help with anxiety and stress. It contains calcium, magnesium, and trace vitamins and minerals, is anti-inflammatory, and soothing to the skin. It is fairly inexpensive and you can purchase dried oat straw at any herb shop or online.
I love it as a tea for its calming and nutritive qualities. Oat straw is rather bland taste so I always add some other nervine herbs for taste. See the recipe below.
Soothing Nervine Tea
- 1 tablespoon dried oat straw
- 1 tablespoon dried chamomile
- 1 tablespoon dried lemon balm
- ½ teaspoon of lavender buds
Mix together and use 1 tablespoon of tea mix to 1 cup of boiling water. Let steep for 5-7 minutes, strain and enjoy!
