February Herb Blurb 2024

February Herb Blurb 2024

February brings us the first signs of spring. Before you know it crocus, snowdrops, and hyacinths will be peeping out of those snow drifts. These cold winter months are an excellent time to plan your dream garden. Will you have edible flowers? Savory herbs? Designer vegetables in container gardens? Get some books out of the library, send off for some catalogs and take some classes.  Get that garden underway!

Upcoming Classes!

February classes are sold out. My next public classes will be in April. Stay tuned.

What I’m Listening To

Candy Chang - Before I Die I Want To...

Herbs of the Month – Turmeric - Curcuma longa

Turmeric - Curcuma longaTurmeric has been getting a lot of attention as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. The ground root of turmeric produces a rich, golden orange spice most people have encountered in curries. I use it frequently in soups, stews, egg dishes, anything Asian or Mideastern, and as Golden Milk, one of my favorite after -dinner drinks.

Curcumin is the ingredient in turmeric which is responsible for its rich golden color. It has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayuverdic medicine. It is now being studied for its effects on cancer, healthy cholesterol levels, liver and gallbladder health, and joint pain relief through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

"I know now, after fifty years, that the finding/losing, forgetting/remembering, leaving/returning, never stops. The whole of life is about another chance, and while we are alive, till the very end, there is always another chance."
Jeanette Winterson
