Susan Evans, Master Gardener & Herbalist teaches a variety of classes and workshops throughout the Denver-Metro area including cooking classes, gardening classes, medicinal herb education, and home & body essentials. Below you will find her current schedule of events. In addition, she is available to facilitate and instruct private lectures, gardening demonstrations, and workshops for groups, businesses or organizations. Public and private classes can be combined or custom-tailored to fit your interests. Other educational opportunities include Wild Herb and Edible Plant Walks, and Workshops & Retreats.

Part I of Food Preservation Boot Camp Series: Drying & Freezing

Morning Class

Turn your garden or farmers market bounty into a ready-to-use pantry full of flavorful dried or frozen veggies, fruits and herbs. Get an overview of the best freezing and drying techniques.

Fun and easy to process, compact dried and/or frozen food is perfect for long storage, high nutrient value and concentrated taste. This preservation method is ideal for camping, school lunches, small storage spaces, and quick, tasty meals. Beginner level course, all levels welcome. Recipes and generous tastings provided.

Part II of Preservation Boot Camp Series: Fermentation

Early Afternoon Class

Did you know that most of the worlds favorite foods, including bread, cheese, beer, and chocolate involve fermentation? Fermentation is all the rage these days from house made pickles to hot sauce to kombucha to mead; it seems that every locavore worth their salt has a crock of something fermenting in their basement.

Want to get in on the fun? Join Veteran to Farmer graduate at Denver Botanic Gardens, Royce Hale, for this tasty and informative beginner-level class where well discuss the basics of fermentation, its health benefits, and how you can safely and deliciously ferment at home. Whether you’re interested in fermented pickles, kimchi, kombucha or sauerkraut, this class will have you ready to make your own incredible house made fermented foods! This is a beginner-friendly course. Generous tastings and recipes included.

Part III of Preservation Boot Camp Series: Boiling Water-Bath Canning

Late Afternoon Class

Come enjoy an afternoon at Chatfield Farms while learning how to safely and creatively preserve your summer and fall bounties to last you through the winter months! No need to be intimidated by the art of canning any longer!

This beginning canning class will teach the new/beginner home canner the basics for boiling water bath canning. We will cover equipment you need, recipe sources, food safety, and we will make 2 different items for your pantry. Generous tasting and recipes will be provided.

Instructor: Kathy Lee, Owner of Modern Gingham Preserves

Special Instructions: This class takes place exclusively outside at Chatfield Farms (in the outdoor kitchen) and is an all-day program. Please dress accordingly for weather. Water and sunscreen are advised. There will be breaks in between classes. Generous tastings will be provided in each class throughout the day. (less)
